Patient de-identification Process API - Implementation Template

Overview

This asset is a component of MuleSoft Accelerator for Healthcare, which is a collection of pre-built assets and documentation that enables healthcare organizations to improve operational efficiency and deliver an elevated patient experience by securely connecting electronic health records, CRM applications and more. These foundational components accelerate MuleSoft customers’ key integration initiatives and expedite their adoption of industry standards, such as HL7 v2 and FHIR.

This application is responsible for altering FHIR-formatted patient datasets to ensure that the output does not contain any information that could allow the consumer to re-identify the patient. The de-identification process can be handled in a variety of different ways and requirements vary dramatically depending on the use case. This solution includes two types of mappings: pre-defined and user configured. The pre-defined mappings have been developed and provided as part of the application itself. These mappings include fields and criteria that are believed to be more broadly applicable based on review of regulatory requirements (e.g. HIPAA “Safe Harbor” method) and discussion with subject matter experts. The user configured mappings are generated via the provided Configuration Manager web application and are targeted at specific business rules that are more likely to change across use cases. The beauty of building this offering as an Accelerator solution is that both the pre-defined and user configured mappings can be modified to fit an organization’s specific needs.
